How to Make a Difference When
You Witness Bullying Online

How to Build a Positive Online Community

You are more powerful than you think: it only takes one person speaking out to change how others think and act.
Sometimes little things, like liking or upvoting a negative comment, can make it look like we're joining in on the bullying. Think about how the target might feel before you react to something mean. Even doing nothing can look like you're on the bully's side. Don't make it about the person who's being mean or about the person being targeted: keep what you say focused on what's happening and how it hurts you and the community.

You can try saying:

"It's no fun for me when people are being mean."
"If people keep acting like that we're all going to get banned."

You can also try publicly saying positive things about the target, but don't make it directly about what's happening:

"Hey, [target's name], great shot!"
"Big thanks to [target's name] who made my day a little better just by being herself."
Most of kids say they'd be more likely to do something about online meanness if they knew other people would respect them for it!
