How to Get Someone Out of Harm’s Way

If you think someone’s in danger (like if they’ve talked about hurting themselves) or if someone is being threatened (with being physically hurt or with something else that would be really bad, like having their account hacked, or having private photos or videos shared with other people), document and report it right away: see http://www.take-a-screenshot.org/ for information on how to get a screenshot and http://cyberbullying.org/report/ for how to report to a social network. You may also decide to talk to your parents or to your school.

If the situation is less serious but still urgent you can try distracting the person who is doing the bullying or giving the person who’s being targeted a chance to get out of the situation without being embarrassed.

You can try saying:

"Hey [person bullying], I just saw the funniest video -- you have to check this out."
"Hey [person being targeted], can you come help me out?"
